Top 5 Places to Get CHEAP Moving Boxes

Be a good neighbor The first place I suggest to look for cheap moving boxes are from your neighbors, especially new neighbors. If you have new neighbors, they probably needed boxes to move into the complex, and have most likely unpacked everything and no longer need the boxes. Be a good neighbor and take the used boxes off their hand.

Trash diving I usually don’t condone digging through other people’s trash; however, there are many stores that have a lot of boxes that end up in the trash. A great example of this would be a shoe store, or a computer store where they just need the boxes for shipping, but afterwards, need to get rid of them.

Craigslist On craigslist, depending on which city you are in, I have seen FREE boxes under the ‘for sale’ column and the ‘free’ link, every once in a while. This can be helpful since these people obviously want to get rid of their boxes and all you need to do is give them a call.

Wal-Mart If the first three methods of getting cheap boxes don’t work for you, try going to your local Wal-Mart. The boxes are very reasonably priced and they have many sizes to fulfill your needs. Wal-Mart is also a great place to get tape, markers and any other moving supplies.

Other Websites There are of course other websites. One is Boomerang Boxes which sells quality used boxes. You purchase used boxes, use them to move, and when you’re done, if the boxes are still in good shape, you can resell them to Boomerang Boxes. They work to save the environment by recycling the boxes that they can.

Another website you could visit is Uline, which has all your moving needs including boxes, tape, and packaging materials. Searching on Froogle and ebay are also good places to look for cheap boxes if you can’t find them anywhere else

Where to Get Free Boxes for Moving

Find Free Boxes. Boxes can be used many times so don’t let one-time used boxes go to the dump. Plus recycling is good for the environment. Free boxes and packaging material can be found in a number of places.

  1. Apartment complexes have people moving in and out all year long. Check local apartment complex dumpsters to collect their used boxes. You might just find a treasure chest of boxes of all shapes and sizes. All you need is some packaging tape to make them usable.
  2. Check office buildings. Companies are always getting new computers that come in sturdy boxes. Printer paper bought in bulk often comes in lidded boxes that work well for odd shaped items that don’t fit in a closed box. Businesses throw out boxes daily.
  3. Ask friends, neighbors and relatives to be on the lookout for boxes. They can collect them from their offices. They may have new neighbors throwing out moving boxes. They may have boxes stored in their garages, attics and basements just waiting to be used.
  4. Forget boxes and use trash bags for light items like blankets, pillows, towels, etc.

How To Get Free Moving Help

If you aren't going to pay for cheap moving help then friends and family are usually willing to help you move, if you offer the right incentives and are a considerate mover.

    1. Have plenty of cold drinks available especially during a summer move. Don’t forget to stock the water and soda as well as the beer.
    2. Order a keg of beer- most men are willing to go to a kegger moving party. *Suggestion: Keep the keg at the new house as incentive to get the boxes and furniture there quickly. Plus, if your friends have a tendency to drink too much, you don’t want them dropping breakables, putting holes in the walls or injuring one another by being careless.
    3. Offer food. If helpers arrive in the morning have coffee and doughnuts out when they arrive. At the end of the move order pizza, bring in burgers, etc.
    4. Be fully packed when your helpers arrive. There’s nothing worse than showing up to help a friend move only to find they are still packing boxes. Nobody wants to sit around waiting for boxes to carry to the truck. Likewise, nobody wants to do grunt work as a favor when the owner isn’t participating.
    5. Make it a party. After the work is done, get help setting up the barbeque to grill some dogs. Have help setting up your stereo system so you can liven things up with some music, or get your TV set up so you can turn on a ball game. Smoke a cigar in celebration or play a round of poker. This way your friends will know you’re not just using their muscles and trucks, but that you actually appreciate their help and enjoy their company
